Canada take fifth place in Langford

Day 1 (May 12):
Canada vs. Australia:
Fans were pumped for the opening game of the HSBC Canada Women's Sevens at Westhills Stadium as Canada took the field. It was however the visitors who silenced the home crowd with an early try from star player, Emma Tonegato. The ladies from Down Under were in fine-form as they added their second on the stroke of half-time to take a twelve-point advantage into the break. 

The second-half continued in similar fashion to the first as Australia scored another two tries to take a 22-0 lead. Bianca Farella managed to score a late consolation to the delight of the home fans but it wasn't enough as the referee blew the final whistle soon after.

Final score: Canada 7-22 Australia

Canada vs. Spain:
Canada bounced back from their earlier defeat to Australia with a much-improved performance against Spain. After conceding the opening try, Charity Williams crossed under the sticks to give Canada the lead for the first time in the match. The home team added another five-pointer on the stroke of half-time to stretch their lead to nine points at the break. Half-time: Canada 14-5 Spain.

Canada again out-scored Spain with two tries to one in the second-half. Caroline Crossley crossing the white-wash for the first time today, while Charity Williams completed her brace.

The score at the full-time whistle: Canada 24-10 Spain.
 
Canada vs. Ireland:
A stressful encounter between two evenly matched sides. Ireland got off to an unbelievable start as they scored straight off the kick-off to take a 7-0 lead. Spurred on by the home crowd, Canada fought back to level the game at seven-a-piece. It was, however, Ireland who would have the final say in the first-half, as they scored to take a 12-7 lead at the break.

Canada hit back early in the second-half through Natasha Watcham-Roy to level the scores once again. With time running out, Ireland took the lead and looked to have the game in the bag, but Canada had different plans. Charity Williams stole the ball and ran the length of the field to score a famous try, which will live long in the memory of every Canadian rugby fan at Westhills Stadium.

Day 2 (May 13):
Canada vs. USA (Cup Quarterfinals)
Canada ran out to a pumped up home crowd at Westhills Stadium, as they looked to book a place in the semi-finals. It was, however, our neighbours from the South who drew first blood, scoring in the opening minute to silence the vocal home support. They made it two tries in two minutes when Leyla Kelter dived over for USA's second five-pointer of the morning. Canada Captain, Ghislaine Landry was next to score to the delight of the home fans, reducing the lead to seven points. A try from Charity Williams and a third for USA meant the teams went into the break at: Canada 12-21 USA.

The second-half looked to be the Bianca Farella show, as the speedster scored two beautiful tries to give Canada a 26-21 lead with time quickly running out. But it wasn't to be as USA managed to sneak a final try on the full-time hooter to level the game at 26-26. Leyla Kelter then broke Canadian hearts as she kicked the conversion to seal the game for USA.

Full-time: Canada 26-28 USA

Canada vs. England (5th place semi-final)
Canada produced their best performance yet this weekend, as they stormed to a convincing 35-12 win against England. Tries from Sara Kaljuvee and Hannah Darling in the first-half gave Canada a nine point lead at the break. Half-time: Canada 14-5 England.

Canada shifted gears in the second-half, as another brace from Bianca Farella and a well-worked try from Captain, Ghislaine Landry gave the home-side an unassailable 35-5 lead. England did manage to score a late consolation but that was all she wrote, as Canada walked away with an impressive win.

Full-time: Canada 35-12 England

Canada vs. Ireland (5th place play-off)
Canada picked up where they left off against England in the previous game. Bianca Farella was in fine-form once again and she proved to be the difference between the two sides on the day. The powerful runner could not be stopped by the Irish defence and went over for a hat-trick of tries in front of a packed Westhills Stadium in Langford, BC.

Charity Williams and Hannah Darling added their names to the scoresheet to complete a great win for the home team.

Final score: Canada 29-12 Ireland
