Canadian Rugby Championship Day 1 Recap

The afternoon kicked off under the hot Saskatchewan sun with two hard fought games from the U20 women and the U19 men. Quebec edged British Columbia with a score of 24-20 in the U19 division. Tries from Hager, Forteza and Dionisopolis helped their Quebec win such a tight contest. While in the U20 women’s division, The Wolfpack defeated the Nova Scotia Keltics, although there was no lack of effort on the Keltics defensive front, they couldn’t prevent the Wolfpack’s from scoring their fourth try, to secure the 3-point lead. The final score was 20-17 in favor of the Wolfpack. 
Later on in the afternoon, the u20 women from BC and Ontario wrote yet another chapter in their storied provincial rivalry, with Ontario overcoming the BC defense and defeating the Bears by a score of 69-5, with a lone BC try from Vivian Johnson. Ontario were able to rack up an impressive 11 tries from 7 different scorers. On the Field over, we saw the Ontario U19 men take on the Atlantic rock in a thrilling display of offense. Jack McCarthy had an outstanding performance for his province, scoring 15 points through 3 tries. Final score saw the Rock overcome the Blues by a score of 35-19. 
Ken Goodland, Head of player development and Talent Identification had his to say about the competitive nature of this tournament. “The games today showed why this tournament is so important for our athletes. They were highly competitive, intense and the results guaranteed a very exciting upcoming few days. That competitiveness brings out the best in athletes and it is what we need more of at this level” 
Culminating the day we had the first game of the senior women’s CRC, with BC taking on the Prairie wolf pack in the battle of the west. The final score of 29-24 in favor of British Columbia truly tells the story of this game, with impressive attacking and defensive skills put on show. These two teams have set a high bar for the rest of the competition to match; we are truly looking forward to watching these women continue to compete over the next 6 days. With nations senior women’s Head Coach Sandro Fiorno in attendance at the tournament, these women will be excited about the prospect of continuing to compete against the best in the country. 
The tournament kicks off again tommorow at 2pm local time with Quebec taking on the Keltics in the U20 women and the British Columbia taking on the Wolfpack in the U19 men.
