Rugby Canada confirm cancellation of July 11th match versus Italy as World Rugby announce postponement of July Internationals

Rugby 15s Senior Men

“Obviously we were very much looking forward to playing Italy this summer in Halifax."

May 15, 2020 (Halifax, NS) It is with regret that Rugby Canada confirm the cancellation of the international match versus Italy originally scheduled for July 11, 2020 in Halifax, NS due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.  The safety of athletes, staff, officials, and fans remain Rugby Canada’s top priority.

This cancellation comes as World Rugby announced today that all July internationals this year have been postponed due to ongoing government and health agency COVID-19 directives.  Extended travel and quarantine restrictions that apply to numerous countries, and concerns over adequate player preparation time, mean that any sort of cross-border international rugby competition cannot be hosted in July.

Rugby Canada Men’s XV Head Coach Kingsley Jones said, “Obviously we were very much looking forward to playing Italy this summer in Halifax.  We didn’t get the result we wanted against Italy at Rugby World Cup in Japan, so it was great for our team to have another opportunity against them so soon.  However, we completely support this decision as the safety of the teams, staff, and fans must remain Rugby Canada’s top priority. We thank the Italian Rugby Federation and wish them all the best as we all navigate through this pandemic.”
