Canada vs Australia

Canada's Men's Team open with a 19-19 draw against Australia in pool A.

Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team opened the Canada Sevens with a thrilling 19-all draw against Australia. The men from down under were first to get on the scoresheet but weren’t in front for long as Nathan Hirayama levelled the scores at 7-a-piece.

Canada took the lead for the first time late in the half through a Pat Kay score. The home team going into the break with a 12-7 advantage.

The second half started similar to the first with Australia scoring two tries in quick succession to take a 19-12 lead. With time running out, John Moonlight sent the home crowd into a frenzy as he dotted down under the posts to tie the game 19-19 at full time.

Canada vs USA

Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team lost a heartbreaker to USA in their second game of the Canada Sevens at BC Place in Vancouver.

Canada started the better of the two teams, scoring two tries to take a 14-0 lead to the delight of the home crowd. USA then scored three tries of their own to take the score to 14-21 in favour of the away team.

Canada fought back and for the second game in a row sent the crowd into absolute pandemonium as they levelled the game at 21-21 thanks to John Moonlight.

With the game on a knife-edge at 21-all and Canada only metres away from the try-line, USA managed to squeeze the ball away and run the length of the field to win the game.

The final score: Canada 21-28 USA.

Canada vs Uruguay

Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team closed out day 1 of the HSBC Canada Sevens with a convincing 47-5 victory against Uruguay.

The home team had an early scare when Uruguay scored the opening try but that was where it ended as Canada ran riot to score seven tries of their own. Justin Douglas and John Moonlight both crossing the line on two occasions thanks to a number of Nate Hirayama assists.

It was unfortunately not enough to move through to the cup quarterfinals as the USA/Australia result did not go in favour of Canada to the dismay of the home crowd who were hoping for a USA victory.

They will next face Scotland on Sunday in the Challenge Trophy quarterfinals after finishing pool A in third place at 9:30am PT/12:30pm ET.
