NATIONAL SENIOR WOMEN’S CAMPS OFF TO GOOD START

Rugby 15s Senior Women

LANGFORD, BC - Newly appointed senior women’s head coach, Sandro Fiorino is happy with the progress made at the first senior women’s camp in Ontario and is looking forward to building on this foundation, as the west camp kicks off today.

A group of 40 players attended the east camp at Queens University and a further 34 players will be involved at the west camp in Shawnigan Lake, British Columbia.

Speaking after the conclusion of the first camp, Fiorino said he was “surprised with how well the players performed during the scrimmages, with limited preparation.”

“First of all, we brought in a really great group of players, ranging from World Cup vets to up-and-coming ‘U-Sports’ stars, combined with some new, dedicated and hard-working coaches. I believe if you have a platform of good coaches and good people, you’re off to a good start.

For us, putting the systems in place on attack and defence was an important goal and it was eye-opening to see how well the players performed. It left me with a sense of security that we’re in a good spot in the country right now with this type of depth moving forward,” said Fiorino.

The second of the two camps will commence at Shawnigan Lake School in British Columbia today, as Fiorino looks to keep the continuity going and build upon the work done at the east camp.

“Obviously you learn from previous camps, but I believe we’ve built a solid foundation and we’ll keep the structure similar to what we had at Queens University. We’ll start off with testing on day one to see where the players are at - the players have to understand that there are standards that have to be met first before moving towards the on-field work. Introducing the players to our attack systems, as well as working on skills and defensive structures will make up most of our on-field sessions,” added Fiorino.

“Post camp, the players will have an opportunity to review their performances and the coaches will provide feedback for the players to take away and get ready for CRC. The CRC will also be the next platform for evaluation and we’ll use that platform in July to have a look at where the girls are at. From there, we’ll have another opportunity to review and reflect with the players and then start our push and preparation for fall tour,” said head coach, Fiorino.

Canada’s Senior Women’s Team will tour to the UK in the fall for an international test series, dates and fixtures will be announced in the coming months.
