Statement from Allen Vansen and Tim Powers

Rugby Canada

We have all been struck with great sadness at the tragic news of Brodie McCarthy's passing.  Rugby Canada, World Rugby and PEI Rugby Union have all expressed our deepest condolences to the McCarthy family, Brodie's teammates, classmates and the entire PEI Rugby community

In light of this tragic accident, important questions are being asked about player welfare, and we strongly believe that education and engagement on this topic is a critical to achieving the highest standards of safety possible in all contact sports.   Bottom line, player welfare must always be at the forefront, and we continue to work diligently towards creating the safest environments possible through Rugby Canada’s PlaySmart program that was launched in 2016 to educate members and provincial unions on the risk of head injuries on the field and how to properly manage and report them.

Rugby remains a safe sport to play but we will never stop striving to continue to learn and adapt further safety measures for the well-being of all participants, and we strongly encourage our members, and the community at large to learn more about what is being done to create the safest conditions possible for young athletes in Canada.  More information can be found by visiting Rugby Canada’s PlaySmart program.

Players First

It is incumbent on all of us to be leaders in this space, and encourage awareness and education on this important issue.

Again, our thoughts and prayers remain focused on the McCarthy family, and we hope that the support from their friends and family and community will bring them strength at this very difficult time.
