12th Place Finish for Canada at Rugby World Cup Sevens

Canada 12 - 35 Wales - Challenge Semi-Finals

Canada's Men's Sevens Team ended their 2017-18 campaign with a 35-12 loss to Wales on Saturday afternoon. Isaac Kaay and Pat Kay each touched down for a try, while Nathan Hirayama added one conversion but the game belonged to Wales as they ran in five tries and added 10 points off the boot of Luke Treharne. 

Canada 7 - 19 Australia - Challenge Semi-Finals

Lucas Hammond touched down in the right corner, while Nathan Hirayama slotted a difficult sideline conversion in Canada's opening loss to Australia on day three in the Challenge Semi-Final. Australia's tries were scored by John Porch (x2) and Ben O'Donnell. 

With the loss, Canada moves on to face Wales in the 11th place showdown at 6:46pm ET/3:46pm PT to close out the tournament. 

Canada 35-17 Japan - Challenge quarters
Tries: Justin Douglas (2), Matt Mullins (2), Nate Hirayama
Conversions: Nate Hirayama (5)

Canada's Men produced a much improved performance on day two of the Rugby Sevens World Cup, as they outscored their opponents, Japan by five tries to three. Canada never looked in doubt, controlling the game from the word go and scoring four converted tries to take a 28-0 lead into the break.

Justin Douglas added to the score early in the second half to complete his brace and make it 35-0. Canada then stepped off the accelerator with the game all but in the bag with three minutes left to play. Japan managed three consolation tries but the result was never in doubt as Canada claimed a comfortable victory.

Canada 0-28 Argentina - Round of 16

Luck wasn't on Canada's side in the round of sixteen as Argentina scored four tries to progress to the final eight in San Francisco. Argentina were the better side throughout the game with Canada struggling to hold on to the ball and create chances. Two early tries from the South Americans put Canada on the back foot early before a cruel bounce caused Nate Hirayama to miss-kick the ball which lead to Argentina's third try before the break. The Pumas leading 21-0 at halftime.

The second half was a much tighter affair with both teams not giving an inch. Canada could not find a breakthrough and with time running out Argentina put the nail in the coffin when they regathered a grubber kick to dot down under the sticks. Final score Canada 0-28 Argentina.

Canada 29-21 Papua New Guinea - Pre-round of 16
Tries: Harry Jones, Justin Douglas (2), Matt Mullins, Connor Braid
Conversions: Nate Hirayama (2)

Canada got off to the ideal start at AT&T Park as captain, Harry Jones dived over for the first try of the game only seconds after kicking off. Canada quickly doubled their lead when the flying Justin Douglas did what he does best and rounded the defence to score Canada's second of the day. Nate Hirayama added the extras to extend Canada's lead to 14-0. 

Papua New Guinea responded with a try of their own to reduce Canada's lead, before Justin Douglas completed his brace with another trademark try on the stroke of halftime. 19-7 at the break. The second half started in similar fashion to the first with Matt Mullins crashing over for a crucial five-pointer early in the second half. 24-7 in favour of Canada.

With three minutes to go Papua New Guinea made Canadian fans sweat as they scored and converted two tries in quick succession to make it a three-point ball game with a minute to play. Connor Braid, however, had other plans as he skillfully dotted down in the corner to give Canada a relieving opening win in San Francisco.

Canada 12-33 Pays de Galles – Finale pour la 11e place Essais : Pat Kay, Isaac Kaay Conversion : Nathan Hirayama

L’équipe canadienne masculine de R7 a conclu sa saison par un revers de 35-12 aux mains du Pays de Galles dimanche après-midi. Isaac Kaay et Pat Kay ont chacun marqué un essai tandis que Nathan Hirayama a ajouté une conversion, mais les Gallois ont mis leur empreinte sur le match avec cinq essais et 10 points bottés par Luke Treharne.

Lucas Hammond a marqué dans le coin droit tandis que Nathan Hirayama a réussi le botté dans un angle serré dans la défaite contre l’Australie à son premier match de la troisième journée de la Coupe du Monde de R7 2018, soit la demi-finale pour le trophée Challenge. Les essais de l’Australie ont été marqués par John Porch (2) et Ben O'Donnell.

Par cette défaite, le Canada a progressé face au Pays de Galles dans le match pour la 11e place à son dernier match du tournoi.

Canada 35-17 Japon – Quarts de finale pour la 9e place Essais : Justin Douglas (2), Matt Mullins (2), Nate Hirayama Conversions : Nate Hirayama (5) L’Équipe canadienne masculine a offert une bien meilleure performance dans la deuxième journée de la Coupe du Monde de R7 2018, dominant ses adversaires japonais par cinq essais contre trois. Le Canada n’a pas regardé derrière, contrôlant la rencontre d’un bout à l’autre et marquant quatre essais convertis pour prendre les devants 28-0 à la pause.

Justin Douglas a ajouté au pointage en début de deuxième demie pour compléter son doublé et porter la marque à 35-0. Le Canada a ensuite levé le pied de l’accélérateur avec trois minutes à jouer. Le Japon a inscrit trois essais, mais le résultat n’a jamais été mis en doute et le Canada l’a confortablement remporté.

Canada 0-28 Argentine – Huitièmes de finale Essai : - Conversion : - La chance n’était pas dans le camp canadien en huitièmes de finale tandis que l’Argentine a marqué quatre essais en route vers les quarts de finale de la CMR7 à San Francisco. L’Argentine a été la meilleure des deux équipes d’un bout à l’autre du match et les Canadiens ont eu de la difficulté à garder le ballon et à se créer des occasions. Les deux premiers essais des Sud-Américains ont poussé les Canadiens sur les talons en début de rencontre avant qu’un rebond cruel ait empêché Nate Hirayama de botter le ballon pour priver l’Argentine d’un troisième essai avant la pause. C’était 21-0 pour les Pumas à la mi-temps.

La deuxième demie a été plus serrée et ni une ni l’autre des formations n’a accordé un pouce à son adversaire. Le Canada n’était pas en mesure de réaliser de percée et avec le temps presque entièrement écoulé, l’Argentine a ajouté à son avance en récupérant un botté pour marquer entre les poteaux. Marque finale : Canada 0, Argentine 28.

Canada 29-21 Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée – Seizièmes de finale Essais : Harry Jones, Justin Douglas (2), Matt Mullins, Connor Braid Conversions : Nate Hirayama (2) Le Canada a connu un départ idéal au AT&T Park de San Francisco quand le capitaine Harry Jones a plongé au-dessus de la ligne d’essai pour inscrire les premiers points de la rencontre peu de temps après le coup d’envoi. Le Canada a rapidement doublé son avance quand Justin Douglas a fait ce qu’il fait de mieux en contournant la défensive en route vers le deuxième essai canadien dans le match. Nate Hirayama a ajouté les conversions et le Canada menait 14 à 0. La Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée a répliqué avec un essai pour réduire l’avance canadienne avant que Justin Douglas ne complète son doublé avec un autre essai comme il en connait le secret tout juste avant la pause, portant la marque à 19-7. La deuxième demie a démarré comme la première et Matt Mullins a franchi la ligne pour ajouter cinq points. C’était 24-7 pour le Canada.

Avec trois minutes à faire, la Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée a fait suer les partisans canadiens en marquant deux essais convertis rapides pour réduire l’écart à trois points avec une minute à faire. Connor Braid avait toutefois d’autres plans en marquant dans le coin pour procurer une victoire soulageante aux Canadiens à San Francisco.
