ASM Clermont Auvergne knock off Canada Selects in Issoire

Rugby 15s Senior Men

ISSOIRE, FRANCE (August 17, 2018) – Canada Selects dropped their second match of their France Tour 54-15 on Friday evening to ASM Clermont Auvergne.

PEI’s Kyle Baillie got the game’s scoring underway with a brilliant score after poaching the ball in the lineout and finishing it off in the left corner. Guiseppe du Toit would add three points off the boot, but the rest of the first half belonged to the hosts as they scored six tries through Raka (x2), Tao, Tuicuvu, Naqalevu & Ezeala to take a 40-8 advantage into the break.

The second half swayed into Canada’s favour with a scoreless opening 10 minutes, most of which Canada was held inside its own 22m line.

Cole Davis showed his pace off a spilled ball on a turnover to set up Canada’s second try for Lucas Rumball, who fended off one tackler to dive over the line. Despite the score, the home side added two more converted tries in the final 40 to win 54-15.

Canada’s men’s team will now return to Calgary for the third and fourth rounds of the 2018 Senior Men’s Canadian Rugby Championships August 23-26.

With all eyes on November’s Rugby World Cup 2019 repechage tournament in France, these games are crucial for giving Canada’s top domestic-based athletes high quality game time.
