Canada U20 lose heartbreaker to Portugal U20 in Bucharest

Having lead at half time by 26 – 11, the outcome revolved around 2 yellow cards associated with 2 converted tries for Portugal to get them back in the game and 3 late missed penalties by Canada that could have won the game.

In the first half Canada played a nicely structured game that featured impressive driving lineouts, from which 2 converted tries were scored.The tries were scored by Michael Smith at 25 minutes and Jack McRogers at 42 minutes, converted by Will Percillier. Percillier also kicked four excellent penalties at 5,15, 20 and 30 minutes.

In the second half Portugal started explosively and scored a lost distance try .In the process of scoring the Portugese player was fouled by Brennig Prevost leading to the award of a penalty try and a yellow card to Prevost .This was compounded 3 minutes by Percillier receving a yellow card for a late tackle,so Canada were down to 13 men for 7 minutes. During time Portugal scored a converted try from a scrrum.

The remainder of the game was suspenseful as the lead was exchanged 3 times between the teams. Percillier missed 3 kickable penalties to win the game, including a difficult one in the last play of the game. The final score was 31-29, with Canada gaining one point in their pool for a defeat of less than 8 points.

Prevost, Smith and captain James O'neill had fine games. Percillier suffered the unfortunate fate of the goal kicker going from exhilaration to despondency in the same game.

"This was a very disappointing loss because the win was within our grasp," commented head coach Jeff Williams. "We will endeavor to improve for Uruguay and expect the boys to dig in for their second game."

Les Canadiens ont pris une avance de 26-11 à la mi-temps, mais l'issue du match s'est décidée quand deux cartons jaunes associés à deux essais convertis pour les Portugais ont permis à ceux-ci de revenir dans le match. Le Canada a par ailleurs raté trois penalties en dernière portion de match qui auraient pu lui permettre d'aller chercher la victoire.

Le Canada a offert du jeu bien structuré en première demie, profitant d’impressionnants alignements de touche qui ont mené à deux essais convertis. Les essais ont été marqués par Michael Smith à la 25e minute et Jack McRogers à la 42e minute, et ont été convertis par Will Percillier. Percillier a aussi tiré quatre excellents penalties aux 5e, 15e, 20e et 30e minutes.

En deuxième mi-temps, le Portugal a été explosif et marqué un très long essai. En route vers la zone payante, le joueur portugais a été victime d'une faute commise par Brennig Prevost, ce qui a mené à l'octroi d'un essai de penalty et d'un carton jaune à Prevost. Le tout a été compliqué par une punition de trois minutes à Percillier, qui a reçu un carton jaune pour un plaqué effectué en retard, si bien que le Canada a dû jouer à 13 joueurs pendant sept minutes. Le Portugal en a profité pour inscrire un essai converti sur un provenant d’une mêlée.

Le suspense a été au rendez-vous durant le reste du match, alors que l'avance a changé de côté trois fois. Percillier a raté trois penalties réalisables avec la victoire à portée, dont un plus difficile lors du dernier jeu de la rencontre. Le score final a été de 31-29, si bien que le Canada a récolté un point dans son groupe en vertu de cette défaite par moins de huit points.

Prevost, Smith et le capitaine James O'Neill ont tous disputé un bon match. Percillier a été victime du sort qui attend parfois le botteur, passant de la joie à la frustration au cours d'un même match.

« C'était une défaite très décevante parce que la victoire était à notre portée », a noté l'entraîneur-chef Jeff Williams. « Nous tâcherons de nous améliorer en vue de l'affrontement contre l'Uruguay et je m'attends à ce que les gars puisent dans leurs ressources pour leur deuxième match. »

Le prochain match du Canada aura lieu le 1er septembre contre l'Uruguay, équipe qui s'est inclinée 53-34 contre les Fidji. La rencontre commencera à 6h (HE) et sera présentée en direct sur la page www.facebook.com/worldrugby/
