Fiji U20 shatter Canada U20 in last 15 minutes

BUCHAREST, ROMANIA - At 65 minutes of Canada's third game versus Fiji Under-20 at the Junior World Rugby Trophy in Bucharest Canada were leading 26-19. Then Fiji scored six tries through a combination of Fijian brilliance, poor midfield defense and unfortunate errors, and Canada had lost 53-26
Will Percillier, playing at fullback, kicked a penalty at 10 minutes and converted Brandon Schellenberger's 24thminute try. From a series of drives off a midfield scrum Schellenger dived through a ruck to score. Fiji responded immediately with a converted try from first phase off a lineout.
At around 30 minutes Canada made five substitutions, four planned in the forwards (the full front row and flanker) and one forced by a concussion suffered by Percillier. At 40 minutes Canada emphasized their supremacy in tight play when Schellenberger scored his second try directly from a scrum moving forward, converted by Brennig Prevost.
In the second half Canada continued their good play, but Fiji scored a long distance converted try from a scrum inside their 22 metre line at 55 minutes and another try at 62 minutes from a driving lineout. Canada's response was a Prevost penalty at 54 minutes and another at 66 minutes. At 67 minutes a missed midfield tackle lead to a converted try and then the floodgates opened.
"We were very happy with first 65 minutes and very unhappy about our last 15 minutes," commented Jeff Williams Head Coach. "The speed and athleticism of the Fijians overwhelmed us and we contributed to our demise by making errors."
Canada's last game will be for 7th place v Hong Kong on Sept 9. Both Tyler Rowland and Percillier will not be available for this game because of injury.

Évoluant au poste d’arrière, Will Percillier a botté un penalty à la 10e minute, puis il a converti l’essai de Brandon Schellenberger à la 24e minute. Une série de poussées découlant d’une mêlée en milieu de terrain, Schellenger a plongé à travers un ruck pour marquer. Fidji a immédiatement répliqué avec un essai converti sur la première phase après un alignement de touche.
Vers la 30e minute de jeu, le Canada a procédé à cinq substitutions, quatre prévues devant (toute la première ligne et le flanqueur) et une forcée par une commotion cérébrale subie par Percillier. À la 40e minute, le Canada a démontré sa suprématie dans les espaces serrés quand Schellenberger a inscrit son deuxième essai à partir d’une mêlée qui a progressé. Le jeu a été converti par Brennig Prevost.
En deuxième demie, le Canada a poursuivi son bon jeu, mais Fidji a marqué un long essai converti à partir d’une mêlée à l’intérieur de sa propre ligne de 22 à la 55e minute et a ajouté un autre essai à la 62e minute après un alignement de touche bien exécuté. Le Canada a répliqué avec le penalty de Prevost à la 54e minute et un autre à la 66e. À la 67e minute, un plaqué raté au centre du terrain a conduit à un essai converti, puis les écluses se sont ouvertes au-dessus de la tête des Canadiens.
« Nous étions très heureux des 65 premières minutes et très malheureux à propos de nos 15 dernières minutes », a indiqué l’entraîneur-chef Jeff Williams. « La vitesse et les qualités athlétiques des Fidjiens nous ont dominés et nous avons contribué à notre chute en commettant des erreurs. »
Le dernier match du Canada sera pour la 7e place contre Hong Kong le 9 septembre. Tyler Rowland et Percillier ne seront pas disponibles pour ce match en raison de blessures.
