Fiorino names November Tour short list

Rugby 15s Senior Women

LANGFORD, BC –Canada’s Women’s Rugby Team head coach Sandro Fiorino has named his 41-player short list ahead of their November Tour to Europe.

While the team has yet to hit the field in 2018, it’s been a busy year for fifteens rugby. Fiorino hosted East & West camps in Ontario and British Columbia in May and June, along with the highly competitive Canadian Rugby Championship in Saskatoon in July.

“This year’s CRC in Saskatchewan we were fortunate to have a majority of the best women’s rugby players in Canada competing, which raised the quality of the tournament considerably. My coaching staff and I have worked hard with the provincial unions – along with Canada’s Women’s Sevens Program – to identify top talent and build player development pathways,” said Fiorino. “More players will be added to this list from the Sevens program depending on availability with the Youth Olympic Games and tournaments in Denver and Dubai,” he added.

Over the coming weeks, Fiorino will select 30 players from the 41--player short list that will travel to Europe in November.

With three years to the next Women’s Rugby World Cup in either New Zealand or Australia, a focus has been put on development with Canada’s U20 Team wrapping up a three-game series recently in Nova Scotia and the U18 Youth Olympic Games on the horizon in October. The short list includes two members of the YOG squad, along with six players who excelled against England and USA at the Tri-Nations Cup last month.

In November, Canada will play three test matches, along with one “A” contest against England, Scotland and one nation TBC. Unlike last November, where many players were unavailable for selection for various reasons, Fiorino’s roster includes 13 members of Canada’s 2017 World Cup roster, which will surely add depth and leadership.

“The team is excited to once again face the world no.2 ranked England side in Leeds, before taking on well-established nations like Scotland (and one to be confirmed), who’s unions are steeped in tradition and will be an excellent challenge for us,” added Fiorino.

“The majority of our players are currently playing in USPORTS across the country, along with many training at regional training centres in Atlantic, Eastern, Central and Pacific locations. We are excited to have a deep talent pool in women’s rugby in Canada and build towards 2021.”

Canada’s Women’s Team will depart for England in early November and return on the 28th. Broadcast details for all four fixtures will be announced in the coming weeks.
