UVIC to host Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship

UVIC Vikes
Rugby 15s Senior Men

VICTORIA – The 2018 Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship will be hosted in Victoria on Nov. 21-25 and will build off the success of the inaugural event hosted last year in Guelph. The five-day event will be hosted at the University of Victoria’s Wallace field and Centennial stadium.

The six-team tournament will include representation from regions across Canada including the maritimes, Quebec, Ontario and western Canada.

"The Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship is an integral part of Rugby Canada's men's high-performance pathway for providing our coaching staff with an opportunity to identify top-level university athletes in a high-quality competition," said Dustin Hopkins, Rugby Canada Interim General Manager of Rugby Operations and Performance.

"Last year's tournament in Guelph proved to be an excellent competition from the opening kickoff to the final and I expect this year's event at the University of Victoria will be of the same calibre."

The 2017 championship was a battle of B.C. as the UBC Thunderbirds downed the Victoria Vikes, 37-12, in the championship match, while the McMaster Marauders defeated hosts Guelph 28-3 for the bronze. Teams will qualify for the 2018 championship through their respective regional qualifiers, while Victoria will be guaranteed a berth as hosts.

“With our Greater Victoria region being such a tremendous rugby community it seems very fitting for UVic to host this national university championship,” said Clint Hamilton, director of Vikes Athletics and Recreation. “UVic takes pride in hosting high quality championship events and we look forward to welcoming teams from across the country and showcasing the best in Canadian University men’s rugby to our valued community.”

Preliminary games will take place on Nov. 21-23, while the fifth-place game will take place on Nov. 24 and the medal matches on Nov. 25. Live webcasting can be anticipated for at least the medal matches, while ticket and event information will be made available once finalized.

Title Sponsors, Victoria Mitsubishi and Carson Automotive Group and corporate sponsors Pemberton Holmes Ltd and Canadian Rugby Foundation are pleased to make this event possible and lay the groundwork for bigger and better tournaments to come.
