WOLFVILLE, N.S. (U SPORTS) - The U SPORTS women's rugby nationals got off to an exciting start as the Laval Rouge et Or defeated the Calgary Dinos 28-22 in the first of four quarterfinal matches Nov. 1 in Wolfville.

Quarterfinal 2: StFX dominates, beats Queen’s 42-21

 
Once bitten, twice shy goes the old saying - an expression the St. Francis Xavier X-Women took to heart against the Queen’s Gaels in both teams’ opening match at the U SPORTS women’s rugby championships Thursday in Wolfville, N.S.

 

Perennial all-star prop Joanna Alphonso was a one-woman show for the X-Women, tallying a trio of tries that totalled about five metres in combined length.

The Ottawa Gee-Gees, moments from being dethroned as national champions, eked out a last-minute 26-24 over the host Acadia Axewomen in a riveting quarterfinal match at the

U SPORTS Women’s Rugby Championship.

 

With less than a minute remaining in regulation, Sydney Smith’s short plunge knotted the score at 24 apiece and Claire Gallagher’s convert provided the margin of victory, advancing the Gee-Gees to Friday’s semifinal.
