Day One Women's Recap: Canadian University Rugby 7s Championships

KINGSTON, ONT. (March 23, 2019) – On the first day of the Women’s 2019 Canadian University Rugby Sevens Championship, four teams emerged from their pools undefeated. U Vic, U of A, Queen’s, and Guelph all finished Saturday with three wins in the KMCSC Dome, putting themselves in good position for Sunday’s playoffs.

The top two teams in each Pool advance to the Cup quarter-finals, while the bottom two are relegated to the Trophy quarter-finals.

Pool A

1. U Vic: 3-0

2. Sherbrooke: 2-1

4. Western: 0-3

Led by Brooke Bazain, the second highest scorer through Day 1, the U Vic Vikes cruised to first place in Pool A. Their closest match came against the runner up in their Pool, a 27-10 win over Sherbrooke. The Vert et Or earned big wins over Brock and Western to finish second, while the Badgers narrowly won the head-to-head matchup with the Mustangs to avoid finishing last. Brock’s Jenna Rainville managed to crack the top five scorers, scoring the majority of her team’s points.

Pool B

1. U of A: 3-0

2. Laval: 2-1

4. McMaster: 0-3

U of A’s Ali Wicklum leads all scorers after the Pool games, scoring about half of team’s points to help them win all three games on Saturday. Easily getting past York and Laval, the Pandas only had trouble dispatching McMaster, the last place team in the Pool. McMaster put up a fight in all three defeats, losing by three to the Pool leading Pandas, by three to Laval, and by two to York. When Laval and York faced off to determine second in the Pool, the Rouge et Or doubled up their opponents to earn a spot in the Cup quarter-finals.

Pool C

1. Queen’s: 3-0

2. Regina: 2-1

3. Montreal: 1-2

4. SLC: 0-3

With the hometown crowd supporting them, Queen’s had no issues going undefeated on Saturday. Bridget Peros led the highest powered offence in the tournament, scoring 30 points for the Gaels. Regina scored an important victory over Montreal to finish second in the Pool on a last minute try to break the tie. Montreal finished third, while the local Kingston college, SLC, was held off the scoresheet in all three games.

1. Guelph: 3-0

2. Concordia: 2-1

3. Saskatchewan: 1-2

4. Humber: 0-3

A strong outing for the Guelph Gryphons ended with an impressive win over a solid Concordia team, who placed second in the Pool. Humber was unfortunate to end the day winless, losing by only three points to both Saskatchewan and Concordia.
