Rugby Canada’s Morgan Williams joins 6 other influential Nova Scotia natives as latest Hall of Fame inductees
The Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame announced their class of 2019 inductees, featuring seven standout athletes that made great contributions to their community and country beyond.
Rugby Canada alumni Morgan Williams will be inducted as the most accomplished rugby player to ever hail from the province following an impressive international and professional career.
"On behalf of Rugby Canada, we would like to congratulate Morgan on this important and well-deserved recognition,” said Allen Vansen, CEO Rugby Canada. “As both a player and a high-performance coach, Morgan has been an important contributor to the sport of rugby in Canada and is serving as an example of what is possible to young up and coming players in Nova Scotia and across all of Canada. Thanks to the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame for recognizing the impact Morgan is making.”
Hailing from Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, Williams represented his home province at the U17, U19 and senior men’s levels before joining the CCSD Pacific Pride program in BC. He made a name for himself on the international scene, debuting in his first Rugby World Cup at just 23 years old in 1999. Morgan went on to receive 58 caps for Canada over his international career and participated in three Rugby World Cups (1999, 2003 and 2007). His career took him oversees playing professionally in France with Bordeaux-Beles and Stade Francais and in England with the Saracens. He made three appearances for the prestigious Barbarians. Morgan also represented Canada in rugby sevens, participating in two Rugby World Cup Sevens tournaments and two Commonwealth Games.
“It all started in Nova Scotia. Those are my definite roots and everything that has been good in rugby all started there. I’m very humbled to be named to the group of nominees and people that are getting the award and hopefully when I go back in November, I’ll get to see the guys I used to play for,” noted Morgan Williams when asked about the honour.
Since retiring from professional rugby in 2007, Williams has brought his knowledge and passion for the game into coaching, most notably with Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team where he now serves as Assistant Coach and has helped lead the team to an Olympic Bronze Medal and endless podium finishes on the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series tour.
You can watch Morgan Williams work his magic alongside head coach John Tait when Canada battles to secure Olympic Qualification in their final tour stop of the 2019 HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series in Biarritz, France June 15-16. The tournament will be streamed live on CBC Sports in its entirety.
Tickets to the official inductee ceremony happening on November 15th are available for public purchase through the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame.
