October 16, 2020 (Langford, BC) – Canada’s Provincial Rugby Unions recently collaborated to launch a 4-part webinar series specifically targeted for coaches.  Launched during National Coaches Week 2020, the webinar series has provided an engaging new learning opportunity for coaches across the country. The initiative, led by Rugby Alberta’s Graeme Moffat and Peter Houlihan, has brought all 10 Provincial Unions together in collaboration.

Three sessions have been held so far covering topics such as Coaching & Playing Philosophy, Intentional Coaching Behaviors, and Selection & De-selection.  The most recent session held on October 5th featured a very special guest.  Rob Howley, newly appointed senior assistant coach of Canada’s Men’s Rugby Team and consultant with the Toronto Arrows, joined the panel to provide his insights on Selection & De-selection.

The final installment of the series, Designing Practice to Meet the Demands of YOUR Team, is set for Monday, October 19th at 6pm MT.  This entry will bring together many of the themes and discussions from the previous webinars into a practical application of session design.

“It’s been very exciting to collaborate with colleagues from across the country.  We’ve seen all spectrum of coaches participate from the community level up to national team coaches all sharing their experiences and learning from each other.  I believe we’re on the verge of some really innovative development programs for players and coaches whilst also creating a strong and supportive community for coaches,” said Graeme Moffat, Rugby Alberta’s Director of Rugby.   “I’d like to thank all of my colleagues across Canada who helped make this webinar series possible.”

Several figures in the Canadian rugby community were key in designing the webinar topics and session plans including:

·       Pete Houlihan, Rugby Alberta

·       John Long, Rugby Alberta

·       Aaron Takel, BC Rugby

·       Jack Hanratty, Rugby Nova Scotia

·       Paul Connelly, Rugby Ontario

·       Ryan Jones, Rugby Ontario

·       Sandro Fiorino, Rugby Canada

·       Jackie Tittley, Rugby Canada

While the current pandemic has undoubtedly impacted our community in many challenging ways, it has also provided the opportunity for reflection, adaptation, and new ways of engaging participants. Rugby Canada is proud to support the provincial unions in this initiative and look forward to continued collaboration in the future.
