Rugby Canada would like to congratulate Julianne Zussman on her referee appointment to the Men’s Under-20 Six Nations Rugby Championship match between Ireland and Wales on Feb 4, 2022.

February 2, 2022 (Vancouver, BC) Rugby Canada would like to congratulate Julianne Zussman on her referee appointment to the Men’s Under-20 Six Nations Rugby Championship match between Ireland and Wales on Feb 4, 2022.

In 2019, the three-time Rugby World Cup veteran became the first Canadian test player to referee at the international level on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series. Zussman’s rugby resume includes an impressive playing career after retiring in 2018 with 18 tries in 44 tests for Canada. She travelled to three Rugby World Cups and appeared in two rounds of the inaugural 2012-13 Sevens Series.

“Julianne is taking the referee world by storm, and I would expect nothing less from her,” said UVic Women’s Rugby Head Coach Brittany Waters, who played alongside Zussman for a decade with Canada's 15s and Sevens programs. The pair are now colleagues within UVIc's athletic department, where Zussman acts as the Vikes' interim associate director, sport compliance and student support. Waters joined Rugby Canada's Sevens program as an assistant coach in 2021.

“Coming off back-to-back HSBC Series finals appointments in Spain, she is now off to referee a U-20 Nations Cup men’s game in Ireland," added Waters. "This appointment is very impressive and a testament to her dedication and passion for the sport. I’m so proud of her and what she has accomplished.”

Zussman's referee career has seen her appointed to the Tokyo Olympic Games, the 2019-2020 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, Rugby Americas North (RAN) 7s, the Pan Am Games, and the 2019 Women's Super Series.
