Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team is hosting Australia, Japan and Hong Kong China on Vancouver Island for a summer showcase in preparation for the rugby sevens Paris 2024 Qualification Event taking place at Starlight Stadium on August 19 and 20.
The summer showcase consists of two weekends of scrimmages, July 28 to 30 and August 5 to 6, and includes combined training sessions between Canada and Australia, who qualified for Paris 2024 earlier this year through the World Rugby Sevens Series.
Canada has named a 21-player senior squad that includes three Olympians and 11 players who recently competed at the 2023 World Rugby Pacific Four Series in Ottawa against New Zealand and Australia.
Also taking part in the showcase is a 21-player Maple Leaf squad consisting of Maple Leaf Academy players from across the country who have spent the summer training in Langford, as well as five players from Canada’s U20 Women’s Team and four players from Canada’s U23 Women’s Team who will join the showcase following their tour in Boston.
“We are very excited to be hosting Australia, Japan and Hong Kong China as we prepare for Olympic qualification,” said Jack Hanratty, Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team Head Coach. “This is an invaluable opportunity to train alongside and scrimmage with other unions, including one of the top teams from this past season, in the final weeks leading up to team selection and the qualification event.”
All summer showcase scrimmages are open to the public. Scrimmages over July 28 to 30 will take place at Shawnigan Lake School. More information on the August 5 to 6 scrimmages will be announced in the coming days.
Tickets for the rugby sevens Paris 2024 Qualification Event taking place August 19-20 in Langford start at $40 for a full weekend pass and $25 for a single day ticket and are available for purchase at rugby.ca/en/tickets.
