Forty players from Western Canada have gathered at Shawnigan Lake School this week for Canada’s Women’s U18 West camp.

The program will train from August 14 to 20, with intersquad scrimmages on August 16 and 19. In addition, players will attend matches at Rugby Americas North (RAN) Sevens, a rugby sevens Paris 2024 Olympic Qualification Event taking place at Starlight Stadium in Langford over August 19 and 20.

“I am so excited to host the Top 40 Camp for the talented U18 players of Western Canada, said Chelsea Ross, Women’s U18 West Head Coach (University of Alberta). “It has been a summer full of exciting opportunities with the relaunch of the women’s age grade programs, and we are looking forward to building off their momentum and having a great experience at Shawnigan Lake School. The key pieces of camp will be the intersquad competitions, attending the Paris 2024 Olympic Qualification Event, and engaging with senior women’s national team players, staff and alumni.”

Ross is joined on the coaching staff by Laura Russell (Shawnigan Lake School), Olly Winser (Castaway Wanderers/University of Victoria) and Team Manager Emily McComb.

Selections for the Women’s U18 West camp were led by provincial unions. An identification camp was held in Alberta, and players were identified at the Alberta Regional Championships, BC Rugby’s Provincial Regional Championships, the Western Canada Championships, and the Canadian U19 Rugby Championships.

Canada’s Women’s U18 East program held a camp earlier this year in Ottawa.
