Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team to play for final Olympic berth in Monaco

Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team will compete in the World Rugby Sevens Repechage, the last chance qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympics, over June 21-23, 2024 in Monaco.

Stade Louis II, which also hosted final qualification events ahead of the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics, was announced as the host venue for the tournament today by World Rugby.

Only one men’s team will qualify for the Olympics through this event, with 12 men’s teams competing over the course of three days. Along with Canada, the men’s competition will feature Brazil, Chile, China, Great Britain, Hong Kong China, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, South Africa, Spain, Tonga and Uganda.

“It’s great to officially be able to circle this date on the calendar,” said Sean White, Head Coach of Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team. “There’s a long road for us to get to that point of the season and the challenges that lie ahead on the SVNS Series will help us be at our best for Monaco.”

The rugby sevens competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will kick off on July 24, 2024. Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team will not compete in the World Rugby Sevens Repechage, having qualified for the Olympics at Rugby Americas North Sevens in August in Langford.

Ahead of the World Rugby Sevens Repechage, both Canadian sevens teams will continue to compete in the HSBC SVNS Series, which kicked off earlier this month in Dubai and Cape Town. The teams travel to Australia in the new year for HSBC SVNS Perth, taking place January 26-28, 2024.
