Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team opened the tournament in Championship Pool A against the United States, with a try from Keyara Wardley in the final minute giving Canada a bonus point in a 26-19 loss.
The Americans held a 21-0 lead at half-time, with Piper Logan striking early in the second half for Canada, converted by Chloe Daniels. The USA responded in kind a minute later. Canada continued to push, with Fancy Bermudez coming off the bench to add a second Canadian try. Asia Hogan-Rochester converted Wardley’s try at the end of the match.
Qualifier Pool A started with Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team taking on Uruguay. A red card to Matt Oworu in the opening minute put Canada down to six players, with Uruguay taking a 5-0 lead shortly after. A try from Cooper Coats, converted by Thomas Isherwood, put Canada up 7-5, but Uruguay rallied back with a converted try to take a 12-7 lead at half-time. Uruguay scored five tries in the second half, two of which took advantage of a yellow card to Kal Sager, to win 41-7.
Germany struck first in Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team’s second match, with the score remaining at 7-0 for the Germans at half-time. Coats scored his second try of the day, adding a conversion, to tie the game in the ninth minute. Germany regained their lead with a try from Philip Gleitze, with Jack Carson responding in the fourteenth minute to give Canada a 14-12 lead, scoring between the uprights and converting his own try. A break for Germany in extra time gave them the win over Canada however, with a final score of 19-14.
Pool play concludes on Saturday, with Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team playing the United States at 5:37am PT / 8:37am ET and Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team playing New Zealand at 8:03am PT / 11:03am ET and Great Britain at 11:11am PT / 2:11pm ET. All matches can be watched live on TSN+.
