Over 180 players named to Rugby Canada U18 development camps

Rugby Canada’s U18 programming kicks off next week with East and West women’s and men’s development camps that will see 189 young players from across the country experience and learn from a high performance training environment. 

The U18 East camps will take place August 11 to 17, with Queen’s University hosting the women’s camp, and the University of Guelph hosting the men’s camp.  

Rugby Ontario’s Jennifer Russell will lead the U18 East women’s program, joined by assistant coaches Emma DeLory (Saint Mary’s University/Rugby Nova Scotia), Curtis Lauzon (Rugby New Brunswick), Sean Dunleavy (Queen’s University) and Jeremy Cairnie (Seneca Polytechnic).  

The U18 East men’s program will be led by University of Guelph and Canada U20 coach Cory Hector. Joining him as assistant coaches are Sean Medeiros (Brock University), Will Kelly (McMaster University), Ian Mcleod (Western University), Graham Stickler (University of Waterloo), Steve Commerford (Brock University), Shane Cahill (The Rugby Academy), Ewen Curry (University of Guelph) and John Lavery (Queen’s University). 

The U18 West women’s camp will take place August 12 to 18 at Shawnigan Lake School, and the men’s camp from August 11 to 17 at the University of British Columbia. 

Leading the U18 West women’s program is the University of Alberta’s Chelsea Ross, with Olly Winser (University of Victoria), Jake Thiel (University of British Columbia) and Jayne Isherwood (Hartpury University) joining her as assistant coaches.  

The University of British Columbia’s Didier Banse will lead the U18 West men’s program, along with assistant coaches Neil Courtney (Capilano RFC), Peter Houlihan (University of Alberta), Dan Haynes (UBC Okanagan), Connor Hunter (Abbotsford RFC), Owain Cormack (University of British Columbia) and Max Abercrombie (University of British Columbia). 

Players were selected based on identification through regional and provincial pathways, with Rugby Canada U18 coaches working alongside regional and provincial coaches. Identification opportunities included, but were not limited to, Provincial Regional Championships, interbranch competitions, and regional identification camps.
