Canada opened the tournament against Brazil, with Carissa Norsten scoring in the second minute. Pamphinette Buisa doubled Canada’s 5-0 lead moments later, with Asia Hogan-Rochester kicking a good conversion to put Canada up 12-0.
Mahalia Robinson added to Canada’s lead as well, scoring off the kick-off. Brazil scored their first of the game in the sixth minute, but Norsten scored her second by chasing down a kick from Savannah Bauder, with Bauder converting the try to give Canada a 24-5 lead at half-time.
Piper Logan scored off the scrum in the first minute of the second half, converted by Breanne Nicholas. The teams continued to trade tries throughout the rest of the game. Brazil converted a try to put the score at 31-12, but Monique Coffey added to Canada’s tally by scoring her first ever international sevens try. Brazil struck once more, but Bauder had the last of the game, converting her own try in the final minute to give Canada the 43-17 win.
Canada’s second and final pool play match was against Australia. It was a tight first half, and despite two yellow cards to Australia midway through, Canada was unable to score, with Australia leading just 7-0 at half-time.
Australia broke through in the second half, taking advantage of a yellow card to Piper Logan and scoring twice in the first three minutes. Buisa got Canada on the board, but Australia responded immediately with their final try of the game. Hogan-Rochester closed out the match with a try in the final minute, with Australia winning 26-10.
Using a new competition format, HSBC SVNS Cape Town sees pool winners proceed directly to the semi-finals, with teams finishing second in their pool progressing to the fifth place semi-finals and those finishing last in their pools playing in the ninth place semi-finals.
Canada finished second in Pool A and will now play Great Britain in the fifth place semi-finals on Sunday December 8 at 12:06am PT / 3:06am ET. The winner of this game will play in the fifth place play-off (6:06am PT / 9:06am ET), with the loser headed to the seventh place play-off (5:44am PT / 8:44am ET). All matches will be streamed on TSN+.
