Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team topped Pool D on the first day of competition of the 2025 World Rugby HSBC Sevens Challenger, winning both pool play games at Athlone Sports Stadium in Cape Town.

Six different players scored tries for Canada in their first match against Madagascar, a 38-0 win to open the tournament. Kal Sager and Kyle Tremblay scored in the first half to give Canada a 10-0 lead at half-time, with the floodgates opening for Canada in the second half. Elias Hancock, Alex Russell, Michael Laplaine-Pereira and Johhny Franklin all scored, with three conversions from Ethan Turner and one from Thomas Isherwood.

Hancock scored twice in the first six minutes against Hong Kong China, both tries converted by Isherwood. With a yellow card to Alex Russell in the tenth minute, Hong Kong China scored off a scrum, but Isherwood responded immediately, converting his own try. A yellow card to Kal Sager put Canada down a player again. Hong Kong China scored in the final minute, but Canada maintained their lead, winning 21-12.

Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team will now play Germany in the semi-finals on Sunday March 2 at 3:50am PT / 6:50am ET. All matches are available live on TSN+.
