Morgan Di Nardo opened scoring in Canada’s first match, a thrilling back-and-forth contest with Tonga. Jamie Armstrong added to Canada’s score in the fourth minute, converting his own try. Tonga then started to push back, scoring twice to close the gap with Canada, who led 12-10 at half-time.
Armstrong scored his second of the game, once again kicking the conversion as well, early in the second half. Tonga responded shortly after, with Canada leading 19-17. Kyle Tremblay was assessed a yellow card in the 10th minute, but Canada kept Tonga from scoring while short a player. Kal Sager touched the ball down in the 12th minute, converted by Thomas Isherwood, to further Canada’s lead. The final minute of play saw Tonga add one more try, but Canada took the win 26-24.
The second match against Uganda saw Canada dominate offensively. Sager opened scoring, dodging an attempted tackle to get Canada’s first score, the try converted by Armstrong. Uganda scored their only try of the game in the fifth minute, with Armstrong and Tremblay adding tries, and Isherwood a conversion, to give Canada a 19-7 lead at half-time.
Ethan Turner scored in the tenth minute, followed by Sager’s second of the match, converted by Brenden Black. The last minute of play saw Ethan Hager break through Uganda’s defence for the final try of the match, converted by Turner, giving Canada a 38-7 win.
Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team will now play Germany in the semi-finals on Saturday March 8 at 3:28am PT/6:28am ET. All matches are available live on TSN+.
