Canada’s U20 Women’s Rugby Team wins first of two friendlies against Ireland

Canada’s U20 Women’s Rugby Team won 26-15 in their first of two friendlies against Ireland in Dublin.

Ava Ference opened scoring in the first half, a collective team effort that started with a scrum and ended with Brooke Roddham offloading the ball to Ference for the try. Roddham converted the try to put Canada up 7-0. Ireland scored their first of the game shortly after, with the score at 7-5 for Canada at half-time.

Amber Edgerton added to Canada’s lead in the second half, slamming the ball down in the corner. Roddham kicked a tricky conversion to put Canada up 14-5. Following a tough defensive stand, with several phases for Ireland at Canada’s try line, Ireland scored their second of the match.

A strong response off the kick-off following Ireland’s try saw Canada further increasing their lead, with Fiona Day scoring out wide, her try not converted.

Late in the game, Elle Douglas intercepted an Irish pass and dished the ball off to Ivy Poetker, who sprinted down the middle of the field to score. Charlotte Hilton converted the try.

Ireland scored once more before the final whistle, but Canada took the win 26-15.

Canada will play Ireland in a second and final friendly on May 17 at the IRFU High Performance Centre at 1:00pm local time (5:00am PT / 8:00am ET). Score information will be posted on the Rugby Canada social media accounts.
