Call for applications: Student-Athletes and Assistant Coach/Team Lead for U Sport 2018 Women’s Rugby 7-a-Side Championships in Swakopmund, Namibia

Rugby Sevens entered the programme of the FISU World University Championships in 2004 with a first edition organised in Beijing (CHN), which welcomed 159 rugby players from 9 countries. Since then, the number of participants has constantly grown, as well as the number of participating countries, reaching the record number of 273 participants from 17 countries at the 2010 edition hosted by the Portuguese University Sport Federation in Porto. The 5th World University Rugby 7 Championship was organised in the city of Brive-la-Gaillarde, France, one of the homelands of rugby.

Pre-Event Training Camp/Tournament (TBC in the East and West)

Please note that the selection and preparation events have been tentatively scheduled based on previous preparation scheduling for previous events.  A confirmed schedule will be available once all the arrangements have been finalized.                                                 

Financial Commitment: Financial Commitment This is a Rugby Canada funded event with a partnership with Own the Podium.  Costs to athletes will be $500 and include transportation to and from Toronto for the tournament.

Selection Process: All player and staff applications are due no later than 5:00 pm EST on Friday April 20, 2018

Rugby Canada and U SPORTS are issuing this call for applications for female student-athletes interested in being considered for selection to Team Canada.  

Athlete Eligibility: Canadian athletes attending any accredited post-secondary institution (Canadian or otherwise) that meets eligibility standards can compete for Team Canada.  To qualify, athletes must be:

a) Students who are currently officially registered as proceeding towards a degree or diploma at the university or similar institute whose status is recognized by the appropriate national academic authority of their country;
b) Former student of the institutions mentioned in a) who have obtained their academic degree or diploma in the year preceding the event (2017).

All competitors must satisfy the following conditions:

a) Be a national of the country they represent
b) Be at least 17 and less than 28 years of age on January 1 in the year of the event.

All athletes must complete the FISU Certificate of Academic Eligibility in order to be considered eligible for participation: https://usports.ca/en/international/wuc/2018

Athlete Selection Criteria In addition, certain selection criteria have been identified as pre-requisites for consideration.  Under these, the athletes must:                                               

Criteria:

- have been selected as a U SPORTS All-Canadian; or
- been named to the U SPORTS Championship All-star team; or
- be long-listed with the National Women’s Team program; or
- be nominated by their U SPORTS university rugby program.
- Provide game footage of recent 7s play
- Provide a recent 40m sprint and a 1600m time

All player applications are due by Friday April 20, 2018

Player applications will be reviewed by the NSW7s staff and provided to selected coaches for final selection.

Rugby Canada and U SPORTS are issuing this call for applications for coaches interested in being considered for selection to Coach Team Canada

Positions: There is one staff positions to be filled: Assistant Coach/Team Lead. Please note the assistance coach will also take the role of team leader and be will be responsible for some administrative tasks pre, during and post competition.

Team Leader / Assistant Coach:

a)    Previous experience as a coach in 7-a-side rugby.
b)    Previous coaching experience at the post-secondary level (preferred).
c)     Minimum NCCP level 3 coaching certification or equivalent (preferred).
d)    Previous international or national team experience as a coach, manager or athlete.
e)    Previously demonstrated strong administrative and communication skills.
f)     Bilingual (preferred).
g)    Current World Rugby, Concussion Management (General Public), Rugby Ready and Laws online modules.

Applicants for these positions:

1)    Must be committed to providing a positive international sporting experience for the players of Team Canada.
2)    Coaches and team leaders are active rugby coaches at a Canadian post secondary institution (preferred)
3)    Must be available to participate at the World University Games tournament (July 7-16, 2018).
4)    Must be willing to participate in event organization, including liaising with Team Canada players prior to the event to ensure that they are properly prepared for the World Games.
