Eastern Canadian Super League Launched

Rugby 15s Senior Women

Senior men’s rugby has a taken a new step as the eastern provinces launch a new look "Super League”.

Based on the concept of the 6 teams in Eastern Canada feeding into the two regional Canadian Rugby Championship teams (Ontario Blues and Atlantic Rock), the tournament comprises of Newfoundland Rock, New Brunswick Spruce, Nova Scotia Keltics, Rugby Quebec, Eastern Ontario and the Ontario Arrows Academy.

The three Atlantic teams will play each other home and away, as will the three Central teams.

All 6 teams will come together on a finals weekend in Montreal to determine a champion and ranking 2-6 , where each team will play two games ,with 1 Central playing 2 Atlantic, 1 Atlantic playing 2 Central ,and the 3 ranked  teams from each division playing. Two days later, July 15, Winners and losers of the 2 semifinals will play, as will the third ranked team from each division.

The tournament adds a crucial step in the path to play for Canada but will also filter up to the new Ontario Arrows team.

On the announcement Dr Pat Parfrey, Rugby Canada’s World Rugby representative had this to say,

"The CRC is restricted to 4 regional teams which disadvantages players outside of Toronto and BC. This league is a necessary step on the pathway between club and CRC . It has been made feasible by the 6 teams agreeing to cost share the final day”.

John Lavery head coach of the Quebec added his thoughts “The league is a bit of a breath of fresh air. A real carrot for boys in the east to start to push themselves and each other. It will give them a consistent bar to see where they are at and where they need to grow."
