KINGSTON, ONT. (March 23, 2019) – UVic claimed the Women’s 2019 Canadian University Rugby Sevens Championship title to reaffirm their place as the premiere women’s rugby school in Canada. In the hunt for the Challenge Trophy, McMaster had a good second day of competition to finish in ninth and claim the prize.

Top Scorers

64 – Ali Wicklum

45 – Brooke Bazian

43 – Julia Schell

The Vikes led from the outset, as Sherbrooke’s Cinderella story came up just shy of hoisting the Cup. The dominant victory ended 30-0 in UVic’s favour, as they will head back to BC with an extra piece of hardware. Sherbrooke had downed two previously unbeaten teams en route to the final, topping U of A in the quarters and Guelph in overtime of the semis.

Riding the energy of the Kingston crowd, Queen’s won an entertaining third place game over a strong Guelph team. Tied 15-15 time expired in the second half, the Gaels scored the go-ahead try on the last play of the game.

After suffering their only loss of the weekend 21-19 to Sherbrooke, U of A finished the championship in fifth place with a 14-10 win over Laval.

In the battle for the Challenge Trophy, McMaster came out on top. After going winless in their Pool on Day 1, the Marauders rallied to win all of Sunday’s games and claim the ninth place prize in a 21-15 win over Western.
