Sydney Sevens pool play has concluded at Allianz Stadium with Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team headed to the ninth place semi finals and Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team to the ninth place quarter finals.

Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team played just one game on Day 2, facing Fiji in their final pool play match. Fiji took a significant 17-0 lead heading into half time, with Canada striking in the eleventh minute. Bianca Farella accelerated the ball down the field to produce an opportunity for Alysha Corrigan—who joined the team at the New Zealand Sevens having last represented Canada in the fall at the 2021 Rugby World Cup—to score her second try in as many days. A successful conversion from Olivia Apps gave Canada seven points, but Fiji ran away with a 34-7 win.

Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team had a busier Day 2, facing both Australia and Great Britain to wrap up pool play. The team started strong in the opening minutes against Australia, scoring first with Australia’s Henry Hutchison off for two minutes with a yellow card. Brock Webster scored out wide on the left of the field, adding a conversion to give Canada a 7-0 lead. With a loud home crowd cheering them on, Australia eventually took a 22-7 win, with several tries scored with the player advantage following yellow cards to Josiah Morra and Matt Oworu.

Dawson Fatoric scored his first ever World Rugby Sevens Series try in the team’s second game of the day. Great Britain got off to a solid start, leading 26-0 at half time. Canada kept them at bay for much of the second half, with Webster sending the ball to Fatoric to get Canada on the board in the ninth minute of play. However, Great Britain collected a final seven points in minute 12, winning by a score of 33-5.

Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team finished fourth in Pool B, and head to the ninth place semi finals along with Spain, Brazil and Papua New Guinea. Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team finished fourth in Pool A, and move on to the ninth place quarter finals along with Argentina, Kenya, Uruguay, the USA, Spain, Tonga and Japan.

Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team will play in the ninth place semi finals against Spain at 2:10 p.m. PT / 5:10 p.m. ET on Saturday January 28, followed by Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team playing Tonga in the ninth place quarter finals at 3:38 p.m. PT / 6:38 p.m. ET.
