Canada was unable to score in their final match in Pool A against the World Rugby Sevens Series leading Black Ferns, who took a 46-0 win. Finishing as the second best third place team, Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team qualified for the quarter finals, setting up yet another game against New Zealand. This also marked the second tournament in a row in which Canada has played New Zealand in the quarter finals.
Down 33-0 in the 10th minute, a series of great efforts from Piper Logan and Shalaya Valenzuela led to a heads up play and a try from Chloe Daniels, followed by an Olivia Apps conversion, to give Canada seven points. Despite two more tries from New Zealand, Canada continued to push, with 2023 season debutant Taejah Thompson scoring her second try of the tournament in the final minute of play. With a conversion from Breanne Nicholas, the final score was 45-14.
Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team will now play the USA in the fifth place semi finals at 10:34 p.m. PT / 1:34 a.m. ET.
Will Percillier scored his first ever HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series try in Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team’s match against Fiji. Down 26-0 at half time, Lockie Kratz restarted play quickly off a penalty and passed to Percillier, who dodged Fiji’s defence to get Canada on the board. Kratz added a clean conversion, but the Fijians continued their offensive success, winning 40-7.
Samoa had a 29-0 lead at the break in Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team’s final pool play match, but the Canadians held them off for the entire second half, with Josiah Morra scoring for Canada, his 19th try of the season, in the ninth minute. With a final score of 29-5, Canada finished fourth in Pool A, and will now meet Ireland in the ninth place quarter finals on Saturday April 1 at 5:30 p.m. PT / 8:30 p.m. ET.
