Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team has progressed to the quarter-finals at HSBC SVNS Los Angeles after finishing second in Pool C.

Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team has progressed to the quarter-finals at HSBC SVNS Los Angeles after finishing second in Pool C.

Playing Spain in their second pool play match, Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team secured their second win of the tournament with a 31-0 victory. Carissa Norsten demonstrated her speed to score first for Canada, followed by a try from Breanne Nicholas, converted by Chloe Daniels, to give Canada a 12-0 lead at half-time. Krissy Scurfield reached 150 career world series points with a try in the second half. Daniels converted Scurfield’s try before contributing and converting a try of her own. Maddy Grant added one more for Canada in the 13th minute.

Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team closed out pool play against the United States. The hosts scored first and held a 12-0 lead at half-time. Canada rallied together for the second half, with Sabrina Poulin getting the team on the board in the ninth minute. The ensuing play was back-and-forth. The United States were next to score, but Scurfield beat several American defenders to shorten their lead to 17-12. Both teams scored one last try, with Asia Hogan-Rochester scoring in extra time to secure Canada a bonus point, with a final score of 22-19 for the United States.

Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team will conclude HSBC SVNS Los Angeles on Sunday morning in the 11th place play-off.

The team continued pool play on Saturday morning against Fiji in rainy conditions. Canada’s defence put up a strong effort, but Fiji took the win 40-0.

Pool play concluded for Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team against Great Britain. Down 10-0, Canada took advantage of a yellow card to Great Britain, with Kal Sager passing to Alex Russell on the wing for the try, converted by Thomas Isherwood. Sager put Canada in the lead in the final minute of the first half, pushing away Great Britain’s defence to score, with Isherwood once again converting to put the score at 14-10 for Canada at half-time. Great Britain took a 31-14 win however, scoring three times in the second half.

Their third match of the day saw Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team play New Zealand in the ninth place semi-finals. Josiah Morra was the first to score, reaching 300 career world series points, with Isherwood kicking the conversion. New Zealand’s Xavier Tito-Harris scored twice before half-time, giving his team a 12-7 lead over Canada. The All Black Sevens made use of a yellow card to Canada in the second half to score once more, taking the win 19-7.

Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team plays France in the quarter-finals on Sunday March 3 at 10:14am PT/1:14pm ET, followed by Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team playing South Africa in the 11th place play-off at 11:48am PT/2:48pm ET. All games will be available on TSN+.
