Canada’s final matches of the 2024 Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens are confirmed following the second day of competition, with Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team lined up to play for fifth place and Canada Men’s Sevens Team to play for 11th place.

Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team finished pool play at the top of Pool C with a riveting 12-5 win over the USA. Olivia Apps scored in the third minute, making space to cut through the USA’s defence with a dummy pass. Chloe Daniels converted the try, and with neither team able to score for the remainder of the first half, Canada led 7-0 at half-time.

The United States struck in the ninth minute, but with the conversion unsuccessful was unable to tie the game. A thrilling final few minutes ensued with Canada leading 7-5, a lead that was extended in the final minute, with a give-and-go between Fancy Bermudez and Sabrina Poulin giving Bermudez an opportunity to dive over the line and secure Canada’s victory.

Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team then met New Zealand in the quarter-finals, with New Zealand taking a commanding 21-0 lead at half-time. Shalaya Valenzuela gave Canada a lifeline in the 12th minute, receiving a pass on the wing from Krissy Scurfield to score, but New Zealand responded immediately with another try and held on to the their lead, winning 26-5.

Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team faced tough competition from Australia and top ranked Argentina on day two, with Australia winning 31-0 in their final pool play game and Argentina winning 21-0 in the ninth place semi-finals.

The Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens will come to a close on Saturday night, with all matches available live on TSN+. Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team plays Great Britain for 11th place at 7:49pm PT/10:49pm ET and Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team plays Fiji for fifth place at 11:32pm PT/2:32am ET. Additionally, an encore showing of the finals will be available on TSN2 on Sunday April 7 at 7:30am PT/10:30am ET.
