The 2024 Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens came to a close on Sunday, with Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team finishing sixth and Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team finishing 12th.

The 2024 Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens came to a close on Sunday, with Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team finishing sixth and Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team finishing 12th.

Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team played Fiji in the 5th place play-off, with Krissy Scurfield scoring first in the sixth minute by running onto a kick from Sophie de Goede. Fiji scored at the end of the first half to take a 7-5 lead, which they extended further to 19-5 in the second half.

Canada rallied together get back on the board, with Piper Logan stealing the ball away off the restart following Fiji’s third try to close the gap 19-10. Playing 6-on-6 for the final moments with yellow cards to both teams, Fancy Bermudez scored one more for Canada, bringing the final score to 19-15 for Fiji.

Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team met Great Britain in the 11th place play-off. Ethan Hager opened scoring in the third minute, his first career HSBC SVNS series try, with a long sprint down the wing. Great Britain responded swiftly however, with back-to-back tries giving them a 14-5 lead over Canada at half-time.

Ethan Turner, who made his debut with Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team in Hong Kong, also scored his first career HSBC SVNS series try, receiving a pass from Josiah Morra and dodging Great Britain’s defence. Turner brought Canada within two points of Great Britain by converting his own try. D’Shawn Bowen gave Canada a brief 17-14 lead, but Great Britain turned the score in their favour with a try in the 13th minute. A penalty try awarded to Great Britain in the final minute gave them a 26-17 win.

The next stop on the HSBC SVNS Series is HSBC SVNS Singapore, taking place May 3 to 5. More information, including pools and schedule, will be announced in the coming weeks.
