HSBC SVNS regular season comes to a close in Singapore, teams look to Madrid

HSBC SVNS Singapore, and the series regular season, came to a close on Sunday, with Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team taking seventh place with a win over Great Britain and Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team ending the tournament with a close loss to Samoa in the 11th place play-off.

Charity Williams scored twice for Canada against Great Britain, opening scoring in the third minute. Chloe Daniels offloaded the ball to Alysha Corrigan to further Canada’s lead to 10-0 moments later. Great Britain cut Canada’s lead in half just before half-time, but Williams’ second try, converted by Chloe Daniels, came in the ninth minute, giving Canada a 17-5 lead which they defended for the remainder of the match.

Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team faced Samoa in their final match of the tournament, with Thomas Isherwood converting his own try in the fourth minute to give Canada a 7-0 lead. With Canada down to six players due to a yellow card, Samoa scored in the final minute of the first half, but Canada still held the lead with Samoa unable to convert the try. Samoa took advantage of a second Canadian yellow card in the second half to go up 12-7. Henry Kirwan tied the game in the 13th minute, scoring his first career HSBC SVNS series try. Samoa took the win 17-12 however, striking in the final minute of play.

The final stop of the 2024 HSBC SVNS Series is set to take place in Madrid over May 31 to June 2. Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team ended the regular season fifth in the standings and as one of eight teams that has qualified for the SVNS Grand Final in Madrid and retained 2025 core status.

Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team finished the regular season in twelfth, and will compete in the play-off tournament in Madrid, in which the bottom four teams (Canada, USA, Spain, Samoa) are joined by the top four Challenger Series teams (Uruguay, Kenya, Chile, Germany) to compete for the four remaining core status places.
