Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team finished second in Pool B on Saturday at the World Rugby Sevens Repechage in Monaco, and will now play Chile in the quarter-finals.

The team opened Saturday with a win over China. While Shan Changshun gave China an early 14-0 lead, Canada responded with five unanswered tries, four of which were converted by Cooper Coats. Captain Phil Berna got Canada on the board, with Thomas Isherwood touching the ball down between the uprights to help Canada to a tied 14-14 score at half-time.

A long sprint down the field by Alex Russell early in the second half gave Canada the lead. Josiah Morra and Ethan Hager added tries to give Canada a 33-14 win.

Canada’s final pool play match was against Great Britain. While Great Britain scored first, a statement try from Berna, converted by Coats, gave Canada a 7-5 lead. Great Britain scored right before half-time to go up 12-7, and furthered their lead to 17-7 early in the second half.

Great Britain’s Ross McCann was assessed a yellow card with two minutes remaining, which Canada made use of immediately with a try from Hager to close the cap to 17-12. Canada continued to push, with a potential try from Berna held up, but Great Britain held on to their lead to win.

Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team meets Chile in the quarter-finals on Sunday June 23 at 3:43am PT/6:43am ET. This will be followed by semi-finals and finals, with the winner of the final claiming the one remaining berth for the Paris 2024 Olympics. All matches can be livestreamed on RugbyPass TV.
