Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team opened the World Rugby Sevens Repechage on Friday June 21 in Monaco with a 31-12 win over Uganda.

Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team opened the World Rugby Sevens Repechage on Friday June 21 in Monaco with a 31-12 win over Uganda.

While Uganda scored in the opening minute, Ethan Hager responded for Canada off the scrum. The try not converted, Canada trailed 7-5, but Matthew Oworu quickly gave Canada the lead one minute later, with Cooper Coats converting to go up 12-7.

Captain Phil Berna added to the score off a lineout, converted by Coats, with Oworu receiving a pass from Thomas Isherwood to score his second of the match in the final minute of the first half. A third conversion from Coats gave Canada a 26-7 lead at the midway point.

Coats scored a try of his own in the ninth minute. Uganda got on the board once more in the 13th minute, but Canada took the win 31-12.

Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team continues pool play on Saturday June 22, taking on China at 3:04am PT/6:04am ET and Great Britain at 8:32am PT/11:32am ET. Quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals will take place on June 23, with the winner of the final claiming the one remaining berth for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
