Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team to face Australia in the Emirates Dubai 7s quarter-finals

The first stop of the 2025 HSBC SVNS series kicked off in Dubai on Saturday, with Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team progressing to the quarter-finals by finishing third in Pool C with a win over Brazil and losses to Japan and New Zealand.

Emirates Dubai 7s opened with Canada facing Japan. Japan opened scoring in the second minute, with Canadian captain Piper Logan tying the game moments later. Japan went on to score two more tries before half-time however to lead 19-5 at the break, sealing a 40-5 win over Canada with three tries in the second half.

Asia Hogan-Rochester officially surpassed 100 career SVNS series points in Canada’s match against Brazil, with their hat trick helping lead Canada to a 38-12 win. Canada led 12-0 after three minutes, with all points thanks to Hogan-Rochester. Brazil responded with their first of the game, but Breanne Nicholas furthered Canada’s lead, converting her own try. Asia’s hat trick try came in the final minute of the first half, with Canada leading 26-7.

Brazil scored their second of the game in the ninth minute, but were unable to make use of a yellow card to Canadian Savannah Bauder. It was Canada who scored instead, with Carmen Izyk sprinting through Brazil’s defence for her first career SVNS series try, which was converted by Shoshanah Seumanutafa. Pamphinette Buisa scored Canada’s final try in extra time.

Canada’s final pool play match was against the reigning Olympic champions, New Zealand. With the Black Ferns Sevens up 19-0 in the sixth minute, Mahalia Robinson got Canada on the board, scoring her first career SVNS series try. New Zealand furthered their lead in the second half however, keeping Canada’s offence at bay and taking a 38-5 win.

Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team will now play Australia in the quarter-finals at 9:42pm PT (November 30) / 12:42 am ET (December 1). Watch live on TSN+.
