Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team kicks off Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens

Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team was one of the first to take to the pitch in the new Kai Tak Sports Park, kicking off the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens with a win over Japan in the first match of the tournament.

Fancy Bermudez scored twice in the first half, with captain Olivia Apps converting her second try, to give Canada a 12-0 lead at half-time. Japan opened the second half with their first try of the game, but Canada responded, with Bermudez offloading the ball to Apps, who converted her own try. With this try, Apps has surpassed 300 career SVNS series points.

Sabrina Poulin made an impact off the bench, furthering Canada’s score in the 11th minute. Japan scored twice more in the final minutes, but Canada took the win 24-17.

Canada then faced Australia in their second Pool C match. Starting strong, Apps was the first to score, giving Canada an early 5-0 lead. Australia responded quickly, with Maddison Levi scoring her first two tries of the game. Carissa Norsten scored out wide in the sixth minute, fighting off a tackle to bring Canada closer to Australia, who led 14-10. Levi completed her hat trick in the final seconds of the first half however, giving Australia a 19-10 lead at half-time.

Levi scored her fourth try to start the second half. Canada pushed back, with Taylor Perry scoring her first ever SVNS series try in the 13th minute. Australia took the win 26-15, with Canada placed third in Pool C heading into day two.  

Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team will face Spain in their final pool play match on Friday March 28 at 6:30pm PT / 9:30pm ET. All matches can be watched live on TSN+.
