RUGBY SEVENS KICKS OFF AT THE 2025 CANADA SUMMER GAMES IN ST. JOHN’S, NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR
From August 8 - 25, the 2025 Canada Games invites Canadians to come and connect through friendship, sport, adventure and the experience that is Newfoundland and Labrador.
Men’s Rugby Sevens is back for the 2025 Games, following the return of women’s rugby sevens at the 2022 Games in Niagara. Men’s rugby was first added to the Canada Summer Games program in 1981 and 1985, sitting out the 1989 Games, then returning from 1993-2009. The Rugby Sevens competition which takes place August 11-13 is hosted at St. John’s Swilers Rugby Football Club.
Both the women’s and men’s competition will feature teams from BC, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Yukon, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and PEI.
This year’s games promise to be a critical evaluation opportunity for Canada’s age grade teams. Representatives from Canada’s sevens and age grade programs will attend to assess talent and connect with provincial coaches.
“These games will impact our men's and women's sevens programs in the best possible way.” Says Jocelyn Barrieau, Head Coach of Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team. “We are having best on best competition - in a tournament style that will replicate the demands of a 7s tournament. The pride with which each player represents their provinces will also trickle up and follow them as they remain proud to represent their country moving forward.”
“We will definitely use the Games to help build our depth chart at the U18 women's and U20 men's level. This competition will help us identify the next group of players who can represent Canada at the international level both in 7s and 15s. I am very excited to be at the Games in Newfoundland to see and experience the energy fist hand on the sidelines.”
“The Canada Games in 2022 were an amazing sporting experience that happened at a great time. We were finally reopened from Covid, and everyone was celebrating the power of sport as a unifier! The provincial delegations worked very hard to ensure all the participants were supported and had the best possible experience at the Games. De mon expérience presonnelle; la délégation Québecoise a été incroyable et a accepté et encouragé le rugby pour la première fois - mille mercis. ALLEZ LES BLEUS!”
“The multi-sport games experience is a pivotal arc of the rugby 7s sporting experience. Through a multi-sport Games, we are getting an appreciation of and widening our awareness of other sports and athletes which gives us a better understanding of what it means to be Canadian.”
