HSBC SVNS Perth concluded on Sunday in Western Australia, with Canada’s sevens teams now looking towards playing on home soil at the end of February in Vancouver. The third day of competition in Perth saw Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team finish seventh with a win over Fiji and Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team finish twelfth with a loss to Great Britain.

This marked the first time Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team has beaten Fiji on the world series since 2022 in Langford. Maintaining good ball possession, a classic Krissy Scurfield sprint down the wing opened scoring, with Canada leading 5-0 in the fourth minute. A minute later, Chloe Daniels kicked the ball ahead, Olivia Apps chasing it down. Apps kicked it forward as well, collecting the ball and cruising over the try line to increase Canada’s lead. Daniels converted, and Canada led 12-0 at half-time.

The second half opened with a Fijian try, but Canada then regained possession. Charity Williams ran through two defenders to add to the score, once again converted by Daniels. The game closed with a try and conversion from Asia Hogan-Rochester, giving Canada the 26-5 win and seventh place in the tournament.

Following a narrow loss to New Zealand in the 9th place semi-finals on day two, Canada met Great Britain in the 11th place play-off. With Canada unable to convert some early opportunities, Great Britain led 10-0 at half-time, their second try scored in the final minute of the first half. They converted a try in the 11th minute to go up 17-0, with Canada getting on the board in extra time. Thomas Isherwood sent a sneaky offload to David Richard, who then got the ball to Jack Carson on the wing for his third try of the tournament. Great Britain took the win by a final score of 17-5.

Ireland’s women’s team claimed a first ever series title with a win over hosts Australia, while Argentina’s men’s team won their second stop in a row, also with a win against Australia. With the third stop of the series now complete, Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team is sixth in the standings, while Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team is 11th.
