Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team will play in the HSBC SVNS semi-finals for the second weekend in a row, with two pool play wins on the first day of competition in Singapore to top Pool C.
The team opened the tournament against Great Britain, with Fancy Bermudez offloading the ball to Carissa Norsten in the third minute for Canada’s first try. Captain Olivia Apps added another for Canada a minute later. Breanne Nicholas, playing in her 200th SVNS series game, converted both tries.
A yellow card was assessed to Norsten, and despite a great defensive effort from Carmen Izyk, Great Britain scored in the final minute of the first half. Canada led 14-5 at half-time. A strong defensive second half saw Canada maintain their lead. With neither team adding further to their score, Canada won 14-5.
Canada then faced the United States in their second pool play game. Bermudez opened scoring in the third minute, and while the USA tied the game a minute later, Bermudez added a second to ensure the lead for Canada. Nicholas converted both tries before scoring one of her own, putting Canada up 19-7 at half-time.
The United States added a try to open the second half, but scores from Sabrina Poulin and Norsten, and another good conversion from Nicholas on Norsten’s try, furthered Canada’s lead. The Americans scored one more in extra time, but Canada took the win 31-21.
Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team plays Australia in the semi-finals at 10:45pm PT (April 5) / 1:45am ET (April 6). All matches can be watched live on TSN+.
