Women’s Rugby Sevens kicks off on Day 1 of Canada Summer Games
Women’s Rugby Sevens kicked off for the first time ever at the Canada Summer Games as teams from ten provinces took to the pitch at Brock University’s Alumni Field in St Catherines, Ontario on Monday.
Split into two Pools, each team played two round-robin matches on the opening day of action in front of a loud and passionate crowd of family, friends and neutral rugby fans.
Newfoundland got the day underway with a 24-5 victory over Manitoba before British Columbia sealed a convincing 36-5 win over PEI with back Lucie Romeo scoring a try and playing a starring role. Then, Alberta beat Saskatchewan 19-10 before Nova Scotia, led by captain Faith Tilley and an opening try by Emily Dodge, produced a 19-0 upset over Ontario.
After a short break, play resumed with a resounding 33-0 triumph for Quebec over Newfoundland before PEI overcame Manitoba with a similarly dominant, 50-0 performance. Up next, Saskatchewan took on New Brunswick and claimed a dramatic win when Carissa Georgina Norsten went over with just seconds remaining to clinch a 22-19 victory. And the drama continued in the next game when a last-gasp Akina Ng try ensured spoils were shared between Alberta and Nova Scotia, 17-17.
Next up, British Columbia defeated Quebec 26-5 before Ontario seized their first win of the tournament in the day’s final match as they overcame New Brunswick 15-0 with the standout play being Sierra Woods’ end-to-end try.
